A Total of 3 Works... Sphere Shape 'The Sphere', Cube Shape 'The Cube', Band Shape 'The Line'
'The Sphere' Groundbreaking in September... Plays a Key Role Connecting Seokchon Lake Foot Traffic to Songpa-daero
Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) will begin construction within September on the first media art installation, ‘The Sphere,’ which will illuminate Seokchon Lake in the first half of next year.
This is the nation’s first permanent media art facility built in an urban waterfront park. It is also the first outcome of the ‘Seokchon Lake Media Forest Project,’ one of the 25 detailed projects under the district’s flagship initiative, ‘Songpa-daero Premium Street Development.’
Through this project, the district plans to create content using the latest media technology on the east and west lakes of Seokchon Lake, offering an attractive spectacle that can only be experienced in Songpa. The plan aims to encourage visitors to extend their visit beyond the area around Seokchon Lake and continue along Songpa-daero.
In fact, although about 5.5 million people visited Seokchon Lake this spring, most visits were limited to the vicinity of Lotte World Mall and Jamsil Station.
‘The Sphere’ signifies the starting point of a new route where visitors can walk along the Seokchon Lake promenade, stroll through the garden along Songpa-daero, and reach Garak Market to appreciate a trophy-shaped global public art piece, the district explained.
It is also expected to become a representative example of Seoul’s ‘Garden City, Seoul’ initiative.
There will be three media art installations at Seokchon Lake: ▲ the spherical ‘The Sphere’ ▲ the twin cubes ‘The Cube’ ▲ and the ribbon-shaped ‘The Line.’
The first installation, ‘The Sphere,’ will be located at the site of the West Lake management office. It will be a 7-meter spherical structure made with a special curved LED display. It will provide high-quality visuals with a brightness of over 6000 nits, 4K resolution, and 22-bit color, ensuring clarity even outdoors. Rich audio and landscape lighting will be installed to enhance audience immersion.
The district has also prepared various content examples to be showcased on ‘The Sphere.’ These include reinterpretations of Seokchon Lake’s four seasons, Songpa Sandae Nori (traditional mask dance), and symbols of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, combining local identity with cutting-edge multimedia to achieve both artistic value and popular appeal.
Additionally, interactive experiences allowing visitors to participate via kiosks will be implemented.
On the 20th, the district will hold a kickoff meeting for the service contract to build ‘The Sphere.’ Construction will begin within September and is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2025. Plans are actively underway to complete the other two installations by next year as well.
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “Starting with ‘The Sphere,’ we will realize a ‘sculpture of light’ at Seokchon Lake that blends unparalleled art and advanced technology. We aim to create a ‘path never seen before’ connecting Seokchon Lake to Songpa-daero, attracting numerous visitors and ultimately enhancing Songpa’s brand value.”
Meanwhile, as of August, the district has completed 10 of the 25 detailed projects under the ‘Songpa-daero Premium Street Development.’ Within this year, projects such as creating a ‘Premium Pine Forest’ at the Seongnam-Songpa gateway and developing the ‘Jangji Stream Waterfront Sensory Space’ will be promoted, with most projects expected to be completed by the first half of 2026.
