Exhibition of LFP+ with Increased Energy Density and All-Solid-State Batteries
Samsung SDI announced on the 18th that it will participate in the 'IAA Transportation 2024' held in Hanover, Germany, from the 17th to the 22nd (local time). IAA is the world's largest automobile exhibition, held alternately every year in the commercial vehicle and passenger car sectors.
Under the theme of 'A Sustainable Future Realized with PRiMX,' Samsung SDI unveiled its next-generation battery lineup, including the LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate)+ battery optimized for electric commercial vehicles, solid-state batteries, and 46mm cylindrical batteries.
The LFP+ battery applies new electrode plate technology to improve energy density by more than 10% compared to existing LFP batteries. It secures long-life performance capable of making over 1,400 round trips between Hanover and Frankfurt and features fast-charging technology that can charge up to 80% in 20 minutes, making it suitable for commercial vehicles that require long-distance driving. Additionally, it enhances safety by applying thermal propagation blocking technology that prevents heat diffusion to adjacent cells.
Samsung SDI recently completed the technological development of the LFP+ battery and is currently in mass production negotiations with multiple customers.
Next-generation batteries such as solid-state batteries and 46mm batteries were also exhibited. According to the company, Samsung SDI's solid-state battery can achieve industry-leading energy density through proprietary anode-free technology. Since the end of last year, samples have been supplied to customers, and commercialization is proceeding as planned for 2027. The 46mm cylindrical battery is scheduled for mass production in early 2025, about a year earlier than planned, due to securing new customers in micro mobility (M-Mobility).
Choi Yoon-ho, CEO of Samsung SDI, said, "We will closely cooperate with major global customers to supply batteries with the highest quality and safety."
