Traditional Court Music and Hyangbalmu Dance Performed at Opening Ceremony Following Parade, Pre-Exhibition Including Photo Zone Opens at Salgoti Bridge from the 14th
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jung Won-oh) will hold the '2024 Taejo Yi Seong-gye Festival' around Salgoti Sports Park on the 21st.
The Taejo Yi Seong-gye Festival is Seongdong-gu's representative local event utilizing the treasure 'Salgoti Bridge' and the historical figure 'Yi Seong-gye.' This year, it will be themed 'Seongdong In (人), Salgoti Moonlight Outing.'
The festival officially begins at 5:30 PM on the 21st with a reenactment of the 'Taejo Yi Seong-gye Hunting Procession' at Sowol Art Hall. The hunting procession parade, which has continued since 1999, recreates Taejo Yi Seong-gye going on a hunt by linking Salgoti Bridge and the royal horse feeding grounds (Majang), which were representative hunting grounds for Joseon Dynasty kings, under the theme of 'hunting.'
At Salgoti Sports Park, the final destination of the hunting procession, the Taejo Yi Seong-gye Festival opening ceremony will be held from 6 PM. Traditional court music and Hyangbalmu dance will be performed alongside the opening ceremony, presenting the history related to Yi Seong-gye, Yi Bang-won, and Salgoti Bridge through traditional court music and story videos.
Especially this year, a spectacular video and energetic stage composed of traditional and modern gugak (Korean traditional music) familiar and exciting to the public will be prepared to evoke empathy among participating residents, focusing on generational communication through gugak. Food booths will also be set up, making the festival even more abundant.
Before the main festival, a pre-exhibition will be held at Salgoti Bridge starting September 14. 'Cheongsachorong' (traditional Korean lanterns) and a 'Moonlight Photo Zone' will be installed to express the beautiful moonlight and elegant traditional beauty, further raising anticipation for the Taejo Yi Seong-gye Festival.
Salgoti Bridge in Seoul was designated as Historic Site No. 160 on December 15, 1967, and was upgraded to Treasure No. 1738 on December 23, 2011. It is a stone bridge built in the early Joseon period using a total of 64 stone pillars, designed in a diamond shape to reduce resistance to flowing water, and is known as the longest existing bridge from the Joseon Dynasty.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "I hope the Taejo Yi Seong-gye Festival, Seongdong-gu’s representative local festival, will be a meaningful time to reflect on the important value of historical cultural heritage," adding, "We will strive to remember and preserve the long history of Salgoti Bridge together."
