Before Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022, Kharkiv, with a population of over one million, was the second-largest city in Ukraine. Early in the war, Russia attempted to capture this city located 30 km from the border but failed, and since then, Kharkiv has become one of the most heavily bombed cities in Ukraine.

The Russian military attacked Kharkiv with shelling and missile strikes, and recently, glide bomb attacks have increased significantly, dpa reported. The glide bombs introduced by Russia are mainly modified Soviet-era weapons, powerful enough to create large craters about 15 meters wide upon impact. They are generally dropped by fighter jets from 60 to 70 km outside the range of Ukrainian air defenses and fly toward their targets using guidance systems and attached wings.

Additionally, local authorities reported that Russian drone attacks continued overnight in the capital Kyiv and other areas, injuring one person and damaging five houses.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated on Telegram that it shot down 53 out of 56 Russian drones attacking central, northern, and southern regions. Among the downed Russian drones were about 20 heading toward Kyiv.

President Zelenskyy, in an interview with U.S. media the previous day, repeatedly urged the West to provide sufficient weapons support and lift restrictions on the use of long-range missiles, dpa added.

AFP reported that Ukraine recently invited the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to the Russian-occupied Kursk region.
