The "Matinee Concert" series at the Busan Cultural Center, which has received acclaim for its high-quality daytime performances, will present a selection of Mozart's most beautiful opera arias for its final concert of the year.
The third Matinee Concert, scheduled for 11 a.m. on September 27, will open under the baton of Jinju Philharmonic Orchestra's principal conductor Jung Inhyeok, with a performance by the Busan Chamber Music Society.
Conductor Jung Inhyeok graduated from the Korea National University of Arts, School of Music, majoring in conducting, and completed both the conducting program and the highest-level performance program at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin with top honors. In 2001, he was selected as the best conductor at the conducting camp hosted by the Korean Conductors Association, was invited to the Sendai Music Festival in Japan, and won a prize at the Tokyo International Conducting Competition in 2006, leading several prestigious Japanese orchestras. He made his European debut with the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin, and his debut performance received high praise from the German current affairs and culture magazine "Tagesspiegel."
He has also conducted numerous operas, including Verdi's "Falstaff" and Puccini's "La Boh?me," and after returning to Korea, he continued to build his musical career by conducting Bizet's "Carmen," Verdi's "La Traviata," Mozart's "Cos? fan tutte," and premiering Lim Junhee's opera "Karma."
In November 2011, he conducted the Korean premiere of Ambroise Thomas's opera "Hamlet" at the National Theater of Korea, earning the Special Prize at the 4th Korea Opera Awards and the Special Prize in the Opera category at the 1st Shakespeare Awards. After serving as principal conductor of the Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra, he is currently actively working as the principal conductor of the Jinju Philharmonic Orchestra.
The lineup of performers is equally impressive. Soprano Park Hyunjin graduated from the Department of Music at Pusan National University and completed the highest-level performance program at the Hochschule f?r Musik Franz Liszt Weimar in Germany. She has performed as a soloist at the Th?ringen Opernstudio and as a guest member of the MDR, the German national broadcasting orchestra, and appeared as a guest soloist at theaters in Weimar, Erfurt, and Nordhausen.
Soprano Son Jooyeon graduated from the Korea National University of Arts, Department of Vocal Music, the Milan Civic School of Music in Italy, the highest-level performance program at the Vivaldi National Conservatory, and the professional performance program at the Vercelli Viotti Academy. She won second prize at the Italian Art Song Society Competition and first prize at the Federico il di Svevia International Competition in Italy.
Baritone Lee Gwanggeun graduated from Yonsei University's Department of Vocal Music, the Verdi National Conservatory in Italy, and the highest-level performance program at the Hochschule f?r Musik Mainz in Germany. He has performed as a principal resident singer at the Ulm Theater in Germany and played leading roles in many operas at theaters in Ingolstadt, Wiesbaden, Bremen, and Halle. He is currently a professor at the Department of Music at Pusan National University, dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians.
Cellist Hong Seunga, praised by the American daily "The Republic" for her delicate sensibility and luxurious golden tone, won second prize (with no first prize awarded) at the Osaka International Competition and first prize at the Indianapolis Matinee Competition. She earned her master's degree and artist diploma in both cello and baroque cello at the Korea National University of Arts and Indiana University. She has performed with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, New Jersey Baroque Orchestra, and recently completed a collaborative tour with the Spanish chamber orchestra Concerto Malaga.
The program for the 2024 Matinee Concert III in September will begin with the overture to Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro" performed by the Busan Chamber Music Society, followed by the "Letter Duet" sung by sopranos Park Hyunjin and Son Jooyeon, and "Everything is Ready - Open Your Eyes" performed by baritone Lee Gwanggeun. Next, "La ci darem la mano" from "Don Giovanni" will be sung by soprano Park Hyunjin and baritone Lee Gwanggeun, and "Batti, batti, o bel Masetto" will be performed by soprano Park Hyunjin. "Ah, ich f?hl's" from "The Magic Flute" will be sung by soprano Park Hyunjin, and "Papageno Papagena" will be performed by baritone Lee Gwanggeun and soprano Park Hyunjin. Finally, the aria "Come scoglio" from "Cos? fan tutte" will be performed by soprano Son Jooyeon. In addition to these exquisite Mozart opera arias, the audience will also enjoy Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 performed by cellist Hong Seunga and Mozart's Symphony No. 40 by the orchestra. The concert will be enriched by announcer Son Jihyun's commentary, promising Busan citizens a diverse and fulfilling repertoire.
