Storm 'Boris' Hits Eastern Europe... 7 Dead and Thousands Evacuated Due to Heavy Rainfall

Due to the low-pressure storm 'Boris' that struck Eastern Europe, heavy rain continued for the fifth day, causing casualties.


According to foreign media including AFP on the 15th (local time), the village of Kłodzko in southwestern Poland was flooded, resulting in one death and the evacuation of 1,600 residents. The river water level in the area rose to 6.65 meters, surpassing the record set during the heavy rain in 1997.


In the nearby village of Gluholazy, a riverbank collapsed, prompting an evacuation order. As a result, all train services heading to the Czech Republic were suspended.

In the Czech Republic, damage continued due to rainfall and strong winds. The village of Lipov?-l?zn? was flooded, leading to the evacuation of 1,900 people. Local police are searching for three missing persons swept away by the river. The storm caused power outages in 250,000 households across the Czech Republic, with cumulative rainfall measured at approximately 450 mm.


Austria is also experiencing severe damage from the heavy rain. The state of Lower Austria surrounding the capital Vienna was declared a disaster area, and one firefighter deployed for flood response died.


In Romania, one additional death was reported on the same day, bringing the total number of fatalities due to the heavy rain to five.


The water level of the Danube River in Hungary is expected to exceed 8.5 meters, approaching the highest record of 8.91 meters set in 2013.


This heavy rain began across Eastern Europe on the evening of the 11th and is forecasted to continue at least until this day across the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, and other areas.
