Goyang Mayor Donghwan Lee Joins Relay Challenge to Eradicate Youth Gambling

"Youth Illegal Cyber Gambling, a Fraud Crime That Can Never Be Won"

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang City is participating in the 'Youth Gambling Eradication Relay Challenge' on the 13th.

On the afternoon of the 13th, Lee Dong-hwan, mayor of Goyang City, participated in the "Youth Gambling Eradication Relay Challenge" at the Open Mayor's Office in Goyang City Hall.

This challenge, initiated by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in March, will continue until the 17th, during which local government heads and public institution leaders will relay promotional activities to eradicate the spread of illegal youth gambling.

According to the police, the number of youths caught as gambling offenders surged by 208.3% from 12 in 2022 to 37 last year, and many cases have been reported where gambling is the cause of school violence, either as perpetrators or victims.

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan, nominated by Oh Kwon-jae, mayor of Osan, participated in the campaign with the promotional phrase, "Illegal cyber gambling targeting youth is an unbeatable fraud crime," raising awareness about the dangers of youth illegal gambling addiction and widely promoting counseling centers.

Mayor Lee, who took part in the challenge, said, "To eradicate illegal youth gambling, it is important to engage in community gambling addiction prevention activities and foster a healthy play culture," adding, "The city will closely cooperate with the Youth Counseling and Welfare Center, Gambling Problem Prevention and Treatment Center, Office of Education, Mental Health Promotion Center, and police to support youths struggling with illegal gambling."

Youths in need of counseling for gambling problems can receive support through the Youth Counseling Hotline or the Gyeonggi Northern Gambling Problem Prevention and Treatment Center.
