Governor Kim Young-rok of Donghaeng Discusses Issues Including Medical School Establishment
Requests Expansion of Medical Personnel in Vulnerable Areas and Rice Price Measures

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo visited Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital, where an emergency room crisis is expected during Chuseok, to inspect the local emergency medical response site.
About 20 people, including Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, Shim Jong-seop, Director of Social Coordination at the Office for Government Policy Coordination, Gu Bok-gyu, Mayor of Hwasun County, Jeong Shin, Director of Jeonnam National University Hospital, and Min Jeong-jun, Director of Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital, attended the meeting to review the local emergency medical response situation and discuss pending issues to strengthen essential medical services.
Governor Kim Young-rok expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and government officials, saying, “Thank you for opening the way for the establishment of the National Medical School in Jeollanam-do, a 30-year aspiration of Jeonnam residents.” He added, “Jeonnam is steadily implementing various policies to respond to emergency medical situations, including operating situation rooms in all cities and counties, maintaining a 24-hour emergency room emergency medical system, providing special support from the disaster management fund, and extending medical services at local medical centers.”
He further emphasized, “To establish a regionally integrated medical system, we will build a healthcare system responsible for the health of residents centered on the three major medical pillars of Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital and the Mokpo and Suncheon areas.”
In response, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said, “Until now, improvements in medical sites have been supported only through the National Health Insurance finances, but through medical reform, we will significantly increase national funding exceeding 20 trillion won to a level comparable to national defense and public security.” He added, “If the governor decides and brings forward the establishment of the National Medical School in Jeollanam-do, the government will provide full support.”
Governor Kim Young-rok also proposed ▲ the establishment of the National Medical School in Jeollanam-do, ▲ priority placement of public health doctors in medically vulnerable areas such as islands, ▲ separate national funding of 300 million won for emergency medical funds for emergency medical institutions in vulnerable areas, and ▲ implementation of a public health nurse system expanding the public health doctor system to include nurses.
After the meeting, Governor Kim Young-rok and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo encouraged the medical staff of Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital who are maintaining emergency medical services during the Chuseok holiday, comforted hospitalized patients, and promised active support to resolve on-site difficulties.
