Expectations to Ease Chronic Congestion During Commute Hours
Paju City is expanding the 'Geumchon Interchange (IC) entrance road' section of the Seoul-Munsan Expressway, a chronic traffic congestion area, with the goal of opening it in December. On the 13th, Paju City in Gyeonggi announced that it will expand one lane of the ‘Geumchon Interchange (IC) entrance road’ on the Seoul-Munsan Expressway, which experiences habitual congestion during commuting hours.
The Geumchon Interchange (IC) to be expanded this time has been a site of chronic congestion during peak commuting hours due to increased traffic volume near the entrance and exit roads since the opening of the Seoul-Munsan Expressway in November 2020.
Accordingly, the city decided to invest 2.5 billion KRW to add one lane to the 800-meter section of the Geumchon Interchange (IC) entrance road. Construction began in earnest in February and was completed on the 9th. This completion is three months ahead of the originally planned December opening and is expected to help accommodate traffic demand during the Chuseok holiday.
Previously, drivers had to wait through 3 to 4 traffic signals to enter the Geumchon Interchange, but with the expansion of the entrance road, they now only need to wait through 1 to 2 traffic signals to access the expressway. Additionally, vehicles using the expanded lane can exit directly onto the entrance road without changing lanes.
Kim Kyung-il, Mayor of Paju City, said, "With the expansion of the Geumchon Interchange (IC) entrance road section, traffic flow during commuting hours is expected to improve significantly," adding, "We will continue to promote traffic system improvement projects to ensure convenient passage for citizens."
