Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province is promoting the establishment of a Drone Valley and UAM maintenance complex to foster the drone and UAM industries, which are emerging as advanced future industries.

According to Goyang City on the 13th, the city established a dedicated drone industry team in 2021 and has built a drone demonstration city, Daedeok drone airfield, and drone anchor center. Last year, it was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's K-UAM Phase 2 demonstration project and will begin full-scale demonstration projects from the first half of next year. In August, it started a research project to foster the UAM industry and will hold the Goyang Drone & UAM Expo in October.

In August, the city commissioned the "UAM Industry Promotion Plan Research Project" aimed at designating a UAM pilot operation zone, analyzing social acceptance of UAM, and preparing plans for fostering the UAM industry and attracting companies. The project will be carried out by the Korea Aerospace University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation and Wizen Global Co., Ltd. until May next year.

Through this project, the city plans to promote the designation of a UAM pilot operation zone and expand the business by establishing a UAM maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) complex. MRO refers to Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul, encompassing all necessary aircraft repairs to continuously maintain the performance of aircraft and UAM vehicles.

Since expensive aircraft and UAM vehicles require regular inspections and maintenance to ensure continuous safety and performance, the MRO industry is known to generate high added value comparable to aircraft production.

From October 23 to 25, the Goyang Drone & Urban Air Mobility Expo will be held at KINTEX Exhibition Hall 2, featuring drone and UAM experience zones, conferences and seminars on drone promotion plans and certification, and business programs for export and joint purchasing. This expo is part of the 2024 Korea Advanced Technology Exhibition (RAD KOREA WEEK 2024) and will be held alongside seven other exhibitions including RoboWorld, Korea International Construction Machinery Expo, Content Korea, Digital Future Show, Digital Media Tech Show, and THE AI SHOW.
