Prosecution Indicts Middle School Student Without Detention for ‘Bae Hyunjin Stone Attack’ and Requests Medical Custody

A middle school student accused of assaulting Bae Hyun-jin, a member of the People Power Party, has been brought to trial.

The Public Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Jo Min-woo) today (the 13th) indicted 15-year-old A without detention on charges of aggravated assault and requested treatment detention. The prosecution explained, "We comprehensively considered the method of the crime, the extent of the damage, the suspect's age and condition, and the victim's wishes."

A is accused of hitting Assemblywoman Bae's head 15 times with a stone at a building in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, around 5 p.m. on January 25. Assemblywoman Bae was immediately transported to the hospital and is reported to have sustained injuries requiring three weeks of treatment.

A, who was arrested at the scene by the police at the time of the crime, was admitted urgently to a psychiatric medical institution and later transferred to protective hospitalization while undergoing police investigation.

During the police investigation, A reportedly stated, "I went to the scene to meet an aspiring entertainer and happened to meet Assemblywoman Bae, and I committed the crime unconsciously without realizing it."

On February 28, the police sent A to the prosecution without detention, stating, "Although this is a serious matter that can be seen as a terrorist act against a politician, considering that the suspect admitted the charges and related evidence was secured, that he is currently receiving inpatient treatment, and the regulations related to juvenile offender investigations, we proceeded with an investigation without detention."
