Korean Tidal Flats Including Gochang Mudflat Honored as the Only Domestic Site
Receives Certificate at 'GGN 20th Anniversary Ceremony'
Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do announced on the 13th that Korea's tidal flats, the only ones in the country, were selected as part of the 'Second 100 Global Geosites' chosen by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), and received a certificate of recognition.
According to the county, representatives are attending the '8th Asia-Pacific Global Geoparks Network' held in Vietnam from the 8th to the 15th. During this event, at the '20th Anniversary Ceremony of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN),' they received the certificate for the Second 100 Global Geosites.
The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to international cooperation in the field of geology. At the International Geological Congress (IGC) held in August, they announced the 'Second 100 Global Geosites' for the second time since 2022. Korea's tidal flats, including the Gochang tidal flats, were the only sites selected domestically.
The Gochang tidal flats, included in Korea's tidal flats, are designated geological sites within the Jeollabuk-do West Coast Global Geopark. The UNESCO Global Geopark in Gochang features 13 geological sites: Cheonmabong, Jinhunggul, Maaebul, Byeongbawi, Soyosan Lava Dome, Ungok Wetlands and Dolmen Cluster, Songgyeri Paleozoic Gneiss, Myeongmaegi Spring, Gushipo Gamakdo, Myeongsasimni Beach, Sheniers, Daejukdo, and Gochang Tidal Flats.
Omisuk, Director of the World Heritage Division, said, "We are pleased that Gochang's tidal flats, a treasure of world heritage, have been designated as a global geosite and that many people have come to know about it through the Global Geoparks event. We will do our best to promote the value of Korea's geological heritage."
