Two Pedestrians Killed by Mercedes Benz Ramming into Sidewalk in Haeundae

Indian truck collides after running about 10 meters

In Haeundae-gu, Busan, a passenger car crashed onto the sidewalk, resulting in the deaths of two pedestrians.

According to Yonhap News on the 12th, at around 1:12 p.m. that day, a Mercedes-Benz vehicle rushed onto the sidewalk on a road near the entrance intersection of Haeundae-gu Office in Haeundae-gu, killing two pedestrians.

The Mercedes-Benz vehicle involved in the accident hit a truck that was parked on the sidewalk and caused damage up to the entrance of a nearby store before coming to a stop. As the vehicle struck pedestrians, two citizens in their 60s to 70s were rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest but ultimately passed away.

The accident site was a one-way street leading from Haeundae-ro toward Haeundae Market and Haeundae-gu Office. The road was flanked by sidewalks on both sides, but there were reportedly no facilities such as fence structures to prevent vehicle entry.

CCTV footage recording the situation captured the Mercedes-Benz vehicle driving about 10 meters on the sidewalk. It also showed the vehicle rear-ending a 1-ton cargo truck parked near a store. It was confirmed that there was no one inside the cargo truck at the time of the collision.

A witness at the scene, Mr. A, told the media, "Something passed over the road at high speed, and 1 to 2 seconds later, there was a loud bang from the front," adding, "I have never seen a car go that fast in this city."

Another witness, Mr. B, explained, "I heard a sound like lightning and realized it was an accident," and said, "The two deceased pedestrians were thrown far and collapsed."

The driver of the accident vehicle is reported to be in his 70s, and some witnesses speculated that the vehicle may have experienced sudden unintended acceleration. Currently, the Busan police are investigating the specific circumstances of the accident. However, regarding the actual sudden acceleration, the driver was reportedly in a state of shock and unable to provide a proper statement, so no definitive claims have been established.

Meanwhile, a similar accident occurred in July near Seoul City Hall Station, where a passenger car crashed onto the sidewalk. At that time, a vehicle driven by a person in their 60s rushed onto the sidewalk, resulting in 9 pedestrian deaths and 3 injuries.
