"If You Order Now, Payback"... 30-Year-Old Man Who Embezzled 2.8 Billion Won Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison

According to the legal community on the 18th, Han Ok-hyung, a judge of the Criminal Division 8 at the Seoul Southern District Court, sentenced Han Mo (39), who was indicted on charges of fraud and violation of the Act on the Regulation of Conducting Fund-Raising Business without Permission, to seven years in prison.

In November 2020, Han opened an online shopping mall A auction site and spread false information through social networking services (SNS), saying, "We sell gold bars and daily necessities at prices cheaper than online markets. If you choose delivery, we will send the goods after a week or a month, and if you choose purchase, we will return the purchase amount with 10% interest added." Using this method, from November 8 to December 8, 2020, Han received about 2.8 billion won from 458 victims as payment for daily necessities, gold bars, and other goods.

The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "Fraud crimes through unauthorized fund-raising distort sound economic order, undermine the work ethic of the general public, and cause significant social harm by producing many victims in a short period. Therefore, strict punishment is necessary," and added, "The defendant denies the crime and shows no remorse, and the number of victims reaches about 400."
