In Haeundae, Busan, another accident occurred where a passenger car veered onto the sidewalk and struck two pedestrians, resulting in their deaths.
According to the Busan Haeundae Police Station on the 12th, at around 1:13 p.m. that day, a passenger car driven by a man in his 70s, identified as A, crossed onto the sidewalk at the Oegwi three-way intersection near Haeundae District Office, heading in the direction of the one-way street toward the district office.
Afterward, the car collided with a stationary truck, then hit a woman in her 70s, identified as B, and a man in his 60s, identified as C, who were walking on the sidewalk, before crashing into a nearby commercial building and coming to a stop.
B died at the scene, and C was transported to the hospital but ultimately passed away. The driver, A, reportedly did not sustain serious injuries.
According to police officials, CCTV footage showed that the car was speeding just before the accident. The driver claims the incident was caused by sudden unintended acceleration, and the police are verifying this claim.
Police investigations revealed that A was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Authorities are controlling access to the alley at the scene and are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
A utility pole was damaged in the accident, causing a power outage in the nearby commercial area, but restoration work was underway by around 4 p.m. that day.
