Pukyong National University and U.S. Embassy in Korea Open 'Busan American Corner'

Opening Ceremony to Be Held on the 1st Floor of Miraegwan on the 12th

The National Pukyong University and the Embassy of the United States in Korea held an opening ceremony for the 'Busan American Corner' on the first floor of the Mirae Hall at National Pukyong University on the 12th.

The newly opened Busan American Corner is the first American Corner in Korea to be established and operated within a university.


The opening ceremony was attended by Jang Youngsoo, President of National Pukyong University; Joy M. Sakurai, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Korea; Lee Junseung, Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs of Busan; and Yoon Hyeyoung, CEO and Vice President of Coupang Retail Division, among others.


The ceremony included a ribbon-cutting event, a facility tour, a commemorative speech by President Jang Youngsoo, and a special lecture by the Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy. Coupang also participated as part of its various social contribution activities in partnership with the U.S. Department of State for the local community.


President Jang Youngsoo of National Pukyong University said, "I hope that through the content created in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Korea, the Busan American Corner will serve as a symbolic platform where not only students but also local citizens can gain access to diverse cultures and information."


Joy M. Sakurai, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Korea, stated, "The new American Corner is more than just a physical space?it is part of the embassy's efforts to strengthen people-to-people connections between the United States and Korea, and to promote more active exchanges and greater understanding between our two countries."


President Jang Youngsoo and Deputy Chief of Mission Joy M. Sakurai shared a common vision at the opening ceremony, expressing their hope that the Busan American Corner will become a place where students and citizens of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam can broaden their knowledge of American culture and Korea-U.S. public diplomacy, and exchange ideas.


The Busan American Corner is located on the first floor (137 square meters) of the Mirae Hall at the Daeyeon Campus of National Pukyong University. It will provide information on American culture and values, and the two institutions will collaborate to offer English and leadership programs.

It will be used to provide information about American culture and exchange opportunities; offer English learning programs; serve as a public reading space with English learning materials and contemporary literature; and function as a multipurpose space for programs, workshops, and events. It will be open not only to university students but also to residents of Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and the surrounding region.
