Changwon Special City Publishes Issue 170 of 'The Changwon Times' as a Stepping Stone for International City Promotion

Celebrating the 16th Anniversary and 170th Issue of the First English Newspaper Published by a Local Government in September 2008

The Changwon City English newspaper, 'The Changwon Times', which has been published to deliver various news to foreign residents and promote Changwon as an international city in Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, has reached its 170th issue.

Since September 2008, Changwon City has been producing and distributing an 8-page tabloid English newspaper once a month (on the 15th), covering city news, cultural events, tourist attractions, and more. Marking its 16th anniversary this year, The Changwon Times has established itself as an important communication channel that enhances the understanding of Changwon among citizens and foreign residents, provides opportunities for English learning, and aims to help Changwon leap forward as a global city.


This year, the newspaper has played a significant role in drawing domestic and international attention to Changwon by focusing on the 50th anniversary of the Changwon National Industrial Complex, international exchanges in the defense industry, the Jinhae Gunhangje Festival, and the Changwon International Shooting Range.


In particular, since January, new sections such as 'The Taste and Style of Changwon', which highlights the unique charms of traditional markets in Masan, Changwon, and Jinhae, and 'Our Little Heroes', which features stories like the Masan Shinsin Wedding Hall that has offered free wedding ceremonies for 57 years and Mr. Kedar from Nepal who is known as a blood donation evangelist, have provided readers with fresh content. With such diverse news, the English newspaper has become familiar to citizens and is used for school English club activities and as class material.


Park Siyoon, a teacher in charge of the English Newspaper Broadcasting Club at Changwon Daesan Middle School, said, "The Changwon Times introduces articles about everyday life in Changwon, making students interested in English and presenting various perspectives in actual newspaper production."


Choi Jeonggyu, Public Relations Officer, stated, "We are very pleased that Changwon City's English newspaper, the first of its kind among local governments in Korea, has continued to grow and reached its 170th issue. We will continue to work hard to widely promote the city brand of Changwon as the hub of Northeast Asia."
