Incheon City will construct three water storage tanks to ensure a stable supply of tap water in the Ganghwa area.
On the 12th, the city announced that it recently started the basic and detailed design services for the construction of three water storage tanks in the Ganghwa area. Water storage tanks are reservoirs installed at high locations that play an important role in providing clean tap water by responding to sudden demand surges, maintaining consistent water pressure, and preventing discoloration incidents.
The three new water storage tanks to be built in Ganghwa are Hwado Water Storage Tank (facility capacity 1,400㎥), Gyodong Water Storage Tank (1,000㎥), and Samsan Water Storage Tank (1,000㎥). They will be constructed to secure a retention time of more than 12 hours, which meets the Ministry of Environment’s water supply facility standards, enabling a stable supply of tap water in the respective areas.
The city plans to invest 61.5 billion KRW in the construction of these three water storage tanks, completing the design and land compensation by 2026 and finishing the construction by 2028.
Since 2011, the city has built the Gilsang, Ganghwa Industrial Complex, and Naega water storage tanks respectively to supply tap water produced at the Gongchon Water Purification Plant to Ganghwa; however, Ganghwado, Incheon’s representative tourist destination, continues to face water shortages due to the surge in visitors during the summer peak season and weekends.
In particular, some areas in the southern part of Ganghwa (Hwado-myeon, Gilsang-myeon), where lodging facilities such as pensions are densely located, urgently need to switch to indirect water supply considering the increased tap water usage during the summer peak season. Gyodongdo and Seokmodo currently receive tap water from the Naega water storage tank, but additional water storage tanks are needed in consideration of future demand.
An official from the Incheon Waterworks Headquarters stated, "We will do our best to welcome summer peak season and weekend tourists without water worries by constructing three additional water storage tanks in Ganghwa, Incheon’s representative tourist destination visited by over 17 million people annually."
