Uiryeong County was the first in Gyeongnam to use reusable containers at a festival during the Uiryeong Hongui General Festival last April, resulting in a more than 10% reduction in waste compared to the previous year’s festival.
The county has prohibited the use of disposable products and restricted food sales to only reusable containers in the food market recruitment notice for the Richirichi Festival, which will be held from October 3 to 6.
Before using reusable containers, the 2023 Hongui General Festival in Uiryeong County generated about 22,770 tons of household waste. However, after introducing reusable containers at this year’s festival, only 19,780 kg of household waste was produced, achieving significant results.
A county official stated, “We have completed contracts with suppliers of reusable containers equipped with sterilization and washing facilities and plan to promote this to tourists,” adding, “The use of reusable containers at food stalls during this festival will play a major role in making it a step closer to an eco-friendly event.”

Meanwhile, on the 28th of last month, Uiryeong County held the Saenghwalgaeseon Hanmaeum Rally, attended by County Governor Oh Taewan and about 200 members of the Saenghwalgaeseon Association. They invited a zero-waste specialist instructor to provide education on disposable product use regulations and carbon neutrality practices, installed a booth to promote reducing disposable product use, and launched extensive awareness improvement efforts to reduce household waste generation.
