Hanwha Marine & Energy 3 Companies Unveil Fully Carbon-Free Propulsion Ship

Participation in the US 'Gastech 2024' from 17th to 20th

Hanwha Ocean announced on the 12th that it will participate in 'Gastech 2024' along with Hanwha Engine and Hanwha Power Systems to unveil ships and propulsion systems that emit zero carbon. Gastech is the world's most prestigious exhibition related to gas and energy, and this year it will be held in Houston, USA, from the 17th to the 20th.

Hanwha Ocean will showcase a model of an ammonia gas turbine-powered LNG carrier. The ammonia gas turbine is being developed for the first time in the world by Hanwha Power Systems, and it is expected to achieve complete zero carbon emissions as it does not use pilot oil for engine ignition. This propulsion system and ship were proposed directly by Kim Dong-kwan, Vice Chairman of Hanwha, at the Davos Forum last January as a 'zero-carbon propulsion gas carrier,' with a development target set for 2028.

Additionally, they will introduce retrofit solutions as an eco-friendly option before the complete transition to zero-carbon ships. This involves converting existing fossil fuel-powered ships into zero-carbon eco-friendly ships powered by ammonia.

Hanwha Ocean will also exhibit next-generation eco-friendly ships such as the liquefied hydrogen carrier making its debut this time, ammonia-powered ammonia carriers, liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, and the world's first floating LNG production facility (LNG-FPSO) that it constructed.

Hanwha Power Systems will introduce its newly launched Ship Solutions Division's eco-friendly ship retrofit business and floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) retrofit business from last year. They also plan to promote supercritical carbon dioxide power generation systems and high-pressure carbon dioxide compressors, showcasing their eco-friendly power generation and carbon reduction technologies.

Hanwha Engine plans to present its lineup of eco-friendly dual-fuel engines and equipment, as well as long-term service agreements (LTSA) for life-cycle care to ensure stable operation. They will propose leading carbon reduction strategies in the engine market, including the commercialization of ammonia fuel propulsion engines and entry into the eco-friendly retrofit business for existing ships.

A Hanwha Ocean official stated, "The three Hanwha marine and energy affiliates will firmly establish a zero-carbon ship value chain through close cooperation and develop world-class zero-carbon ships to secure overwhelming leadership in the shipbuilding and marine market."
