Transforming Yeongdeungpo into the ‘City of Flowers, Garden City Yeongdeungpo’
“A foolish person rushes, a clever person waits, but a wise person goes to the garden” - Indian poet Tagore -
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will hold the 'Garden Talk Concert & Green Cinema' under the theme 'Gardens Together, Everyday Becomes a Garden' at the 'Mullae-dong Flower Garden' over two days on the 21st and 28th.
Following the declaration of 'City of Flowers Yeongdeungpo, Garden City Yeongdeungpo' and the hosting of the 'Yeongdeungpo Garden Festival' last May, the district has prepared a 'Garden Embracing Culture and Arts' festival to celebrate the upcoming Residents' Day week (September 28).
In particular, this festival adds cultural arts with stories to the garden. It allows residents to enjoy nature, art, and culture together in the garden without having to go far. Residents can stroll through the flower garden embracing nature and experience 'healing' and 'rest.' In fact, research shows that just looking at a garden can reduce anxiety levels by 20%.
The festival will be held at the 'Mullae-dong Flower Garden.' The 'Mullae-dong Flower Garden' is a resident-friendly garden that offers relaxation and leisure with a sand playground, outdoor fitness facilities, and a barefoot clay path, catering to all generations and ages.
On the first day of the festival, the 21st, the event will open with a musical performance. This will be followed by a 'Garden Talk' with garden artists. The 'Garden Talk' will be graced by Hwang Ji-hae, a three-gold medalist at the world-renowned Chelsea Flower Show in the UK, and Nam Su-hwan, head of garden management at the Korea National Arboretum. They will share in-depth and candid stories about why gardens are needed, the value of gardens, and the relationship between gardens and life.
On the second day, the 28th, residents will participate in the 'Our Garden' event, where they create their own gardens. Participants will work with village gardeners to design gardens and select plant species, creating another 'small personal garden' within the Mullae-dong Flower Garden.
The 'Green Cinema,' which allows attendees to experience the beauty of gardens through film, will also be held. At 8 PM on the 21st, the inspiring true story film 'Flower Show' about a world-renowned garden designer from Ireland will be screened. On the 28th, the film 'Poetry Written on the Land,' featuring stories of Seonyudo Park and Yeouido Saetgang Ecological Park by Korea's first landscape architect Jung Young-sun, will be shown.
The 'Garden Talk Concert & Green Cinema' can be attended through pre-registration and on-site registration via the district’s official website under the 'Our District News' section. Additionally, various cultural performances and hands-on experiences such as aquatic plant and natural moss frame making are prepared.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “Please look forward to the transformation of Yeongdeungpo into a ‘Garden City’ where flowers and plants can be found wherever you go, making residents’ lives more relaxed and refreshing.” He added, “We will do our best to create a prestigious city where gardens and culture harmonize, so that living in Yeongdeungpo becomes a source of pride and joy.”
