Ahead of schedule by about 20 days, improvement work including installation of vehicle and pedestrian traffic lights completed on September 11, following pedestrian protection fences before crosswalks... Expected to greatly prevent collisions between people and vehicles caused by queues in crosswalks during busy commuting hours with heavy foot traffic
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that it completed improvement works on the 11th, including relocating the crosswalk in front of Seongsu Station Exit 3, installing pedestrian safety fences, and installing traffic signals for vehicles and pedestrians to ensure pedestrian safety.
Seongsu Station Exit 3 is a place where many users enter Seongsu Station during the evening rush hour from 6 to 7 p.m., and vehicles passing through the lines waiting up to the crosswalk were tangled, posing a very high risk of pedestrian safety accidents.
Accordingly, the district relocated the crosswalk 10 meters south and installed protective fences to prevent jaywalking, thereby securing pedestrian safety.
On July 30, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Traffic Safety Deliberation Committee approved the traffic facility improvement plan for pedestrian safety in front of Seongsu Station Exit 3. Following this, the district urgently allocated the project budget to carry out construction such as sidewalk widening, raised crosswalks, protective fences, and bollards, and started construction on August 26.
Subsequently, from September 3, the relocation of the crosswalk, installation of protective fences and bollards were completed in sequence, and all construction, including the installation of pedestrian traffic signals, was finished on September 11. In particular, the pedestrian traffic signals were originally scheduled to be completed by the end of September, but through close cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Seongdong Police Station, Seoul City Hall (Traffic Operations Division), and Seongdong Road Office, the installation was completed about 20 days ahead of schedule.
The district has established a cooperative system with Seoul Metro and the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (riot police) to manage large crowds around Seongsu Station Exit 3 and other nearby areas, and has deployed seven safety management personnel to do its best to prevent safety accidents.
Also, as a result of requesting the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Metro to create a new exit at Seongsu Station since 2021, the goal is to complete the exit by the end of 2025, and continuous consultations are currently underway.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “By promptly completing the relocation of the crosswalk around Seongsu Station, we have not only improved the inconvenience for users but also secured pedestrian safety,” and added, “We will continue to make efforts to resolve traffic inconveniences for residents and ensure seamless daily safety for all residents.”
