President Yoon Suk-yeol met with Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, who is visiting Korea on the afternoon of the 11th, and discussed the development of bilateral relations and the prevention of crimes against Korean nationals in Cambodia, the presidential office announced.
During the meeting, President Yoon said, "Under the interest and support of President Hun Sen, who holds the Korea-Cambodia relationship in high regard, the bilateral relationship, which was elevated to a 'strategic partnership' last May, is making remarkable progress."
He added that since this year the Korea-ASEAN relationship is expected to be elevated to a 'comprehensive strategic partnership,' he anticipates that new momentum will also be created for the development of relations with Cambodia.
President Yoon urged attention to the prevention and eradication of crimes against Korean nationals, which have recently surged in Cambodia, so that citizens of both countries can visit each other's countries with peace of mind.
President Hun Sen expressed his gratitude for the Korean government's development cooperation and human resource development support for Cambodia's social and economic development, saying, "We consider Korea as Cambodia's most important partner."
He also noted that the Korea-Cambodia Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which came into effect in 2022, has been actively driving trade and investment between the two countries, and expressed hope that Korean companies will continue to participate in large-scale infrastructure cooperation projects such as the 'Korea-Cambodia Friendship Bridge.'
President Hun Sen welcomed the elevation of the Korea-ASEAN relationship to a 'comprehensive strategic partnership' and said he will continue to contribute to the development of bilateral relations.
Hun Sen served as Prime Minister of Cambodia from 1985 until August last year and assumed the position of President of the Senate on April 3rd.
