In particular, Bokseonghyeon has been a political, economic, and cultural center since the time of King Taejo of Goryeo, boasting tea ceremonies, tea culture, and Buddhist relics.
This festival will showcase various traditional folk games, sports events, cultural performances, and specialty product exhibitions that highlight this history and culture.
The festival will officially begin with pre-event activities including a line dance performance, Gilsseomnori (traditional thread-spinning play), and traditional performances by the Boseong County Gugakdan (traditional Korean music troupe). Afterwards, the ‘Bokseonghyeon Award’ will be presented to those who have contributed to enhancing the honor of the four northern myeon.
In the afternoon, four types of folk games such as Yutnori and a residents’ singing contest will take place at Garamtteul in Gyeombaek-myeon and the gateball field, allowing local residents to enjoy together.
The closing celebration will feature lively stages by invited singers along with various prize draws to captivate the audience.
This festival is expected to contribute not only to the harmony of local residents through the sales booths promoting specialty products from the four northern myeon but also to the revitalization of the local economy by encouraging visitors to use local businesses.
Lee Yong-geung, chairman of the Bokseonghyeon Hanmaeum Festival Promotion Committee, said, “Through this festival, we will reexamine the long history of Bokseonghyeon and create a place where residents of the four northern myeon can unite and enjoy together,” adding, “We hope it will be a festival where the tradition and modernity of Boseong blend and all generations can enjoy together.”
Im Yun-mo, head of Gyeombaek-myeon, said, “The 17th Bokseonghyeon Hanmaeum Festival, prepared with the cooperation of residents from the four northern myeon, will provide a valuable opportunity for not only local residents but also visitors to experience traditional culture,” and added, “It is expected to widely promote the history of Bokseonghyeon and serve as a chance to strengthen community cohesion.”
Meanwhile, Bokseonghyeon is known as a center of tea culture, with records indicating that tea grew naturally when Odongsa Temple was founded during the reign of King Hyeonjong of Goryeo in 1016. Even today, tea fields remain in the Bokseonghyeon area, showing that the tea history of Bokseonghyeon has continued for at least a thousand years.
