Guryongpo Memorial Park to Become a Premium Healing Space Blending Culture and Art
Mayor Lee Kangduk: "Homi Peninsula with Guryongpo at Its Center to Be a Hub for Marine Leisure Tourism"
"We will make every effort to ensure that attracting the memorial park to Guryongpo becomes a source of great pride for local residents."
Kangdeok Lee, mayor of Pohang, held a press conference at the city hall briefing room on the 11th and announced the "Creation of a Premium Memorial Park and the Comprehensive Development Plan for Homibando."
On the 11th, Pohang Mayor Lee Kangdeok held a press conference at the city hall briefing room and announced the "Luxury Memorial Park Development and Comprehensive Homiban-do Development Plan."
The city plans to transform the Homiban-do area into a hub for marine leisure tourism in the East Sea region by linking the memorial park with Guryongpo's tourism resources under three main strategies: ▲ Creating Korea's top-class memorial park ▲ Revitalizing the local economy through marine tourism ▲ Establishing Guryongpo as a premier living hub for Homiban-do.
Before the briefing, Mayor Lee expressed his gratitude to the residents of Guryongpo for their full support in enabling the construction of the memorial park, an essential urban facility. He also stated that, in addition to the projects proposed by the Guryongpo Residents' Council, various other projects would be comprehensively promoted to make the memorial park a model case for citizen coexistence and regional development.
The memorial park is planned to be completed by 2028 and will be developed as a premium space that goes beyond a simple burial facility, incorporating culture, art, and healing.
The burial facilities will be constructed underground, while above-ground structures such as enshrinement facilities will be built as distinctive landmark buildings. The surrounding area will feature a world-class sculpture park similar to Vigeland in Norway, creating a high-quality funeral space where culture and art coexist.
Additionally, the plan includes a viewing tower overlooking the East Sea and Homiban-do, a four-season arboretum, and hologram art, making it a complex experiential space enjoyable day and night throughout the year. The city will actively encourage participation from renowned domestic and international architects in the design of the memorial park facilities.
For the main access road, the city will first construct a road connecting Guryongpo-eup to the memorial park, ensuring that visitors and tourists pass through the downtown area and commercial districts of Guryongpo-eup.
To increase the resident population through a rise in stay-type tourists, the city will establish the "Three Major Tourism Roads" where visitors can enjoy, eat, and relax: ▲ Blue Railroad ▲ Eco Trekking Road ▲ Ocean Tour Road.
First, utilizing the area's natural scenery, the city will promote the construction of the Homiban-do Blue Railroad, gradually building a monorail along the coastline and attracting accommodations and leisure facilities such as resorts and infinity pools centered around the stations.
The Greenway will be extended to Homiban-do, creating a circular trail around the peninsula. An Eco Trekking Road will also be developed, offering extreme sports such as horseback riding and paragliding centered around Malmokjangseong.
In addition, an Ocean Tour Road will be created to attract young people and ensure that tourists fill the area even at night.
Through the NINE Stream Project, Guryongpo Port will be transformed into a tourist space, and hotels with beautiful ocean views will be attracted. Furthermore, the city will activate culinary tourism resources by creating specialized gourmet streets and towns in areas such as Guryongpo, Homigot, and Donghae-myeon.
To establish Guryongpo as a premier living hub, the city will attract large warehouse-style discount stores and develop a sports complex with an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, and park golf course to promote healthy leisure and welfare for residents.
Pohang City will promptly carry out the "Basic Memorial Park Planning Service" and the "Comprehensive Homiban-do Tourism Special Zone Planning Service" for the development of a luxury memorial park and the sustainable growth of Homiban-do.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok said, "We plan to develop the Homiban-do area centered on Guryongpo to the extent that the phrase 'sangjeonbyeokhae' comes to mind," adding, "We will do our best to ensure that the memorial park becomes a landmark for marine leisure tourism on the East Coast, not just a simple burial facility."
