Suncheon Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu, "Doing Our Best to Protect the Lives and Safety of Environmental Cleaners"

Riding a Cleaning Vehicle... Direct Collection and Transport of Household Waste

On the 11th, Nogwan-gyu, the mayor of Suncheon City, boarded a cleaning vehicle to directly collect and transport household waste in order to alleviate citizen inconvenience caused by garbage collection ahead of Chuseok and to protect the lives and ensure the safety of sanitation workers.

Following a fatal fall accident involving a sanitation worker from a cleaning vehicle step in Yangsan City, Gyeongnam Province, the city completely removed the steps from cleaning vehicles starting from the 22nd of last month. As a result, sanitation workers had to move on foot or by boarding the vehicle to collect waste, which delayed the collection and transportation time of garbage in urban residential areas.

In response, the city quickly established countermeasures, formed two dedicated teams, and mobilized all cleaning personnel and equipment for operation. Especially during the Chuseok holiday period, to prevent any inconvenience to citizens, cleaning resources and all staff will be deployed on-site until the 13th, and the dedicated teams will be expanded to four teams.

Mayor Noh said, “The mayor, public officials, and sanitation workers exist for the citizens, and there must be no inconvenience to citizens ahead of Chuseok,” adding, “We will strive to maintain clean streets and protect the lives and safety of sanitation workers.”

He also said, “Garbage collection is expected to return to normal soon, so we ask for the understanding of citizens,” and “We hope citizens will also reduce waste and dispose of garbage according to the designated collection days.”
