Professor Song Sanghyun from the Department of Surgery at Dankook University Hospital received a commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare at the 7th Life Sharing Week Ceremony in recognition of his contributions to promoting organ and tissue donation.
As the chair of the hospital’s Organ Transplant Committee, Professor Song has led organ transplant surgeries since 2013 and has been at the forefront of raising awareness about organ donation and encouraging donations to revitalize organ transplantation.
In addition, he has worked closely with brain death management physicians within the hospital to connect brain-dead donors with organ transplant recipients. As a result, Dankook University Hospital has had approximately 100 brain-dead donors since 2013.
Professor Song Sanghyun stated, “Life sharing, which gives transplant recipients a new life, is only possible thanks to the noble decisions made by patients’ families and the interest and efforts of many people,” and added, “As a medical professional, I will continue to do my best to identify and manage potential brain-dead donors so that patients suffering from organ failure can gain new life and lead normal lives.”
Meanwhile, Dankook University Hospital signed a brain death management agreement with the Korea Organ Tissue Donation Agency, an organ procurement organization, in 2013. Since then, the hospital has directly managed brain-dead organ donors and performed transplant surgeries without transferring donors elsewhere, and currently manages the largest number of brain-dead organ donors in the Chungcheong and Honam regions.
