Cheonan City Transplanted Gasiyeon to Sameun Reservoir Last July
Cheonan City, Chungnam Province, announced that the second-class endangered wild species, the floating heart flower, transplanted to Jiksan Samun Reservoir to promote biodiversity, has recently successfully bloomed.
Cheonan City in Chungnam Province announced on the 11th that the endangered wild plant species, Euryale ferox, which was transplanted to the Sam-eun Reservoir in Jiksan for biodiversity enhancement, has recently succeeded in blooming.
In July, the city signed an agreement with the Geumgang Basin Environmental Office, Shinsegae Food Co., Ltd., and Chollipo Arboretum to conserve and restore habitats of endangered species that have been destroyed due to climate change and ecosystem degradation.
Accordingly, the city planted 100 Euryale ferox plants in Sam-eun Park at Sam-eun Reservoir to create a habitat, and has launched a three-year project to propagate and restore Euryale ferox, protect the habitat, and improve the environment until July 2027. The project has shown successful establishment from its first year of implementation.
In particular, Euryale ferox is an annual aquatic plant with thorns all over the plant, and it is known for its challenging growth conditions, making flowering difficult. Therefore, the success of this blooming is especially significant.
The flower, which has the meaning "Good luck to you," is native to Japan, Manchuria, China, and India. In Korea, it was designated as an endangered plant species in 1989 due to rapid environmental changes such as land reclamation and water pollution.
Cheonan City plans to continue expanding habitats for endangered wild species through ongoing monitoring and management in cooperation with the three organizations.
A city official stated, "Starting with the blooming of Euryale ferox, we will put more effort into the restoration and preservation of this species," adding, "We will continue to strive to conserve biodiversity and increase the population of endangered wild species in the future."
