The Era of Wireless Charging for Electric Vehicles Begins... Ministry of SMEs and Startups Launches Regulatory Sandbox Demonstration

Demonstration Project for High-Power Wireless Charging of Electric Vehicles at Gas Stations 추진

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced on the 11th that it will begin three types of demonstrations in the ‘Gyeongbuk Next-Generation Wireless Charging Regulatory Free Zone for Electric Vehicles’: ‘high-power wireless charging for electric vehicles,’ ‘wireless charging linked with wired chargers,’ and ‘wireless charging for ultra-small electric vehicles.’

In August 2022, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups newly designated the ‘Gyeongbuk Next-Generation Wireless Charging Free Zone for Electric Vehicles’ as part of the 7th Regulatory Free Zone to foster a new technology industrial ecosystem. Currently, eight innovative domestic companies in the wireless charging sector for electric vehicles are participating in the free zone project for a total of four years until August 2026, conducting demonstration projects.

The Next-Generation Wireless Charging Regulatory Free Zone for Electric Vehicles consists of three demonstration projects. The ‘high-power wireless charging demonstration for electric vehicles’ involves the proactive demonstration of a 22kW wireless charging system and participation in establishing international standards for future ultra-fast wireless charging (50kW). Additionally, it will conduct the first domestic demonstration of wireless charging infrastructure at urban hub gas stations linked with future-oriented gas station new industries of oil companies.

The ‘wireless charging demonstration linked with wired chargers for electric vehicles’ will demonstrate combined charging by connecting wireless chargers to already installed wired charging facilities. The ‘wireless charging demonstration for ultra-small electric vehicles’ aims to prioritize application to special-purpose vehicles such as logistics and delivery services through localization and commercialization of key technologies, and based on this, target entry into overseas markets including Europe.

Kim Hong-ju, Head of the Free Zone Innovation Planning Group at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, said, “The Next-Generation Wireless Charging Free Zone for Electric Vehicles, designated as the 7th Regulatory Free Zone, has officially started demonstrations after detailed consultations on safety with related government agencies such as the Fire Agency, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, National Institute of Technology and Standards, and Ministry of Science and ICT.” He added, “We will do our best to pioneer the technology field of wireless charging for electric vehicles and foster South Korea’s scientific and technological innovation and new industries.”
