Direct Experience of Rural Culture Rarely Encountered in Modern Times

Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) is recruiting participants for the "Traditional Rice Harvesting Experience" from the 11th to the 19th.

The "Traditional Rice Harvesting Experience" is an educational program that provides students with a hands-on opportunity to learn the wisdom of traditional agriculture and helps them understand nature and farming. It will be held at Jungnang Happiness 1 Farm for local elementary school students in grades 4 to 5 and their parents.

Participants can enjoy various activities for about an hour and a half, including ▲understanding the growth process from rice plants to rice grains ▲traditional rice harvesting ▲threshing using old farming tools (removing grains from rice or barley ears) ▲making brooms using eco-friendly rice straw.

In particular, the threshing experience using traditional farming tools such as the holtae (a farming tool used to strip rice ears and collect grains) will provide a special opportunity to directly experience rural culture that is hard to encounter in modern times.

Additionally, families will have a meaningful time making brooms together using rice straw, enjoying fun, practicality, and environmental awareness.

The participation fee is 1,000 KRW per elementary school student, and applications will be accepted online on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 a.m. on September 11 to 6 p.m. on September 19 via the Jungnang-gu Office website.

Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "Through this traditional rice harvesting experience, I hope children will have a meaningful time seeing and learning about the ecology of rice paddies and rice plants firsthand and realizing the value of a bowl of rice." He added, "We will continue to realize the value of urban agriculture so that children can grow up healthily in nature."
