"Significant Harm to Examinees"
The Korea Council for University Education (KCUE), which oversees university admissions, recently expressed concerns about the medical community's call to postpone the increase in medical school admissions for the 2025 academic year, stating that "any changes would cause significant confusion throughout the entire admissions process."
On the 10th, KCUE issued a statement saying, "Considering the overall situation, KCUE and its member universities have no choice but to proceed with admissions according to the announced schedule," and added, "We ask the government and related agencies to actively cooperate to ensure stable admissions operations."
KCUE noted that from the 9th, applications for early admissions for the 2025 academic year have been received, with examinees and their parents deciding on universities and departments to apply to and submitting their applications.
They also emphasized that, reflecting the government's medical school expansion policy and the allocation results by university, they lawfully announced the 'Changes to the 2025 University Admissions Implementation Plan' at the end of May.
KCUE stated, "Each university has finalized the guidelines for early and regular admissions and has already notified examinees of the number of available spots," adding, "If major details such as the admissions schedule or number of spots change while early admissions are underway, it would cause significant harm to examinees."
They further explained, "University admissions consist of a very complex mechanism," and sudden changes are undesirable.
They continued, "While submitting an application may seem like a simple individual choice, it is a decision made by a family considering multiple complex factors," adding, "Examinees and their parents do not only consider their aptitude or grades but also take into account the choices of other applicants, carefully calculating advantages and disadvantages before making a final decision."
