On the 10th, Gwangju Metropolitan City held a 'Deepfake Sexual Crime Response Meeting' at the first-floor Citizen Dialogue Room of City Hall, attended by more than 20 officials from the Gwangju Women's and Family Affairs Division, the Standing Human Rights Ombudsman, the Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee, the Gwangju Police Agency, and the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education.
The meeting discussed cooperation measures to actively respond to digital sexual crimes as deepfake videos have recently been rapidly disseminated through social networking services (SNS).
In particular, since deepfake videos are spreading quickly among teenagers in schools, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education will take the lead in identifying the actual damage within schools and strengthening preventive education so that students recognize deepfakes as crimes.
The Gwangju Police Agency plans to proactively and preemptively respond to the diversifying juvenile crimes by operating a special task force centered on the investigation division for false video crimes and strictly investigating the production and possession of deepfake videos through the cyber investigation unit.
Lee Young-dong, Director of the Women's and Family Affairs Bureau, stated, “Deepfake sexual crimes are acts that trample on the human rights of victims, and cooperation among related agencies is essential to eradicate them. We will make every effort to ensure that deepfake sexual crimes are eradicated by frequently holding meetings to discuss current issues and countermeasures.”
