Harris Camp Announces Policy Overview on Homepage
Kamala Harris, the U.S. Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President, reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening alliances as a key campaign pledge.
On the 9th (local time), the Harris campaign released a policy outline titled "A New Way Forward" on their website. The document briefly covers key policy areas including the economy, reproductive rights (the right to make decisions related to childbirth), guns, borders, and foreign and defense policy.
The campaign stated, "We will stand with our allies, confront dictators, and lead on the world stage," outlining the foreign and defense policy stance. It added, "(Harris) made it clear in meetings with China's President Xi Jinping that the U.S. will always defend its interests against China's threats," and explained that she "visited the Indo-Pacific region four times to advance U.S. economic and security partnerships."
In particular, the campaign highlighted Vice President Harris’s major diplomatic activities, giving significant attention to her past visit to South Korea. The campaign explained, "She visited South Korea’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to reaffirm our unwavering defense commitment to South Korea in the face of threats from North Korea."
However, there was no mention of a stance on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The Democratic Party also did not include related content in the platform and policies adopted at last month’s national convention.
The campaign also indicated an intention to continue a stance of countering China.
The campaign emphasized, "Vice President Harris will ensure that it is the United States, not China, that wins the competition for the 21st century," and stressed, "We will not abandon American global leadership but rather strengthen it."
Regarding the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas, it was explained that President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris are working together to negotiate a ceasefire to ensure Israel’s security, secure the release of hostages, and end the suffering in the Gaza Strip. The campaign also emphasized support for Israel’s right to self-defense and efforts to uphold the dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination of Palestinians.
Additionally, the campaign stated, "Vice President Harris will never hesitate to take any necessary action to protect U.S. forces and interests from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups."
This policy outline placed the greatest emphasis on economic policies to strengthen the middle class. However, since it did not introduce specific pledges, U.S. media reported that it has been criticized by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
