Opposition Criticizes 'Emergency Room Roundabout'... Prime Minister Han Says "Medical Community and Past Governments Also Responsible"
From the first day of the National Assembly's government questioning session, the ruling and opposition parties engaged in heated debates over investigations related to First Lady Kim Geon-hee and former President Moon Jae-in, as well as rumors about martial law preparations.
During the political sector government questioning on the 9th, Kwon Seong-dong, a member of the People Power Party, criticized the 'preferential hiring suspicion involving the former president's ex-son-in-law' as "a typical case of collusion between politics and business and a form of bribery." He added, "Moon Da-hye, the daughter of former President Moon, described herself as a frog hit by stones while criticizing the prosecution's investigation. The person I know is by no means a wronged frog but a shameless kangaroo." He pointed out, "If she were neither the president's daughter nor son-in-law, and if the president had not engaged in bribery, how could she have enjoyed such privileges?"
Park Ji-won, a member of the Democratic Party, retorted, "Mr. President, you fail to control prices, bank interest rates, and the medical crisis, but you win gold medals only in attacking Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party, and former President Moon." He added, "A successful president should control the prices, bank interest rates, and the medical crisis that need to be addressed."
Regarding the investigation into the First Lady's luxury handbag incident, Lee Geon-tae of the Democratic Party stated, "The prosecution did not even conduct basic investigations such as seizing the First Lady's mobile phone or obtaining communication warrants. They conducted what is called an imperial investigation." He criticized, "It is utterly incomprehensible how a clear case can be dismissed without charges." Jang Dong-hyuk of the People Power Party countered the opposition's call for a special investigation law related to the luxury handbag incident, saying, "Even according to Pastor Choi Jae-young's testimony, the luxury handbag was not given for a legitimate purpose or as compensation but was admitted to have been handed over to put the First Lady in political danger." He added, "Such a special investigation law is ultimately for political conflict."
Regarding the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's economic achievements and the emergency medical chaos, the opposition and Prime Minister Han Deok-soo clashed. When Seo Young-kyo of the Democratic Party said, "The global economy has improved, but only South Korea has fallen into ruin. It is all the fault of President Yoon and the Prime Minister," Prime Minister Han responded, "That is completely incorrect and misleading statistics. Let me explain. Which statistics are you referring to that claim South Korea is in shambles?"
When Park asked, "People are dying due to emergency room shuffling. Who is driving the people to death? The doctors, the government, or the president?" Prime Minister Han replied, "It is the medical community and past governments. I believe the governments that did not make difficult decisions because it was hard and challenging also bear responsibility."
Criticism from ruling party members also poured out against the opposition's allegations of martial law preparations and excessive impeachment motions. Shin Dong-wook of the People Power Party said, "The first person to mention the term 'martial law' was lawyer Kim Gyu-hyun, who represents Colonel Park Jeong-hoon." He added, "This term rapidly spread through left-leaning YouTube channels, and the Democratic Party accepted and disseminated it. Yet, no concrete evidence has been presented so far." Kwon Seong-dong pointed out, "The opposition's endless impeachment motions aim to create an atmosphere for the president's impeachment. The Democratic Party wants to impeach the president and hold an early presidential election." He added, "They believe that if they win the early election, they can shake off the judicial risks facing Lee Jae-myung, the party leader."
