August 10 Fire at Namguro Market Contained Early, Preventing Casualties and Property Damage
On the 9th, Guro-gu (Mayor Moon Heon-il) awarded a plaque of commendation, the 'Proud Citizen Award,' to a man in his 20s who prevented a major fire through swift initial response at the Renaissance Hall of the district office.
Kim Jong-hyun, who received the Guro-gu Mayor's Commendation from Mayor Moon Heon-il on this day, witnessed a fire at Namguro Market late at night on August 10 while returning home and promptly reported it to 119.
He then used a nearby fire extinguisher to suppress the fire, preventing what could have escalated into a major disaster.
Namguro Market, where the fire occurred, is a representative traditional market in Guro-gu visited by an average of 10,000 people daily, with 204 stores in operation. Without calm and prompt action, this could have resulted in significant casualties and property damage.
Mayor Moon Heon-il of Guro-gu said, “On behalf of the citizens of Guro-gu, I thank 'Citizen Hero' Kim Jong-hyun for his courageous actions that prevented what could have been a major accident,” adding, “We will continue to strive to make Guro-gu a safer place.”
