‘International Conference on Climate Change and International Maritime Law’ Held
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) held the opening ceremony for the ‘International Symposium on Climate Change and International Maritime Law’ at its main office in Busan (located in Yeongdo-gu, Busan) on the 9th.

The ceremony was attended by Kang Dongjin, Vice President of KIOST, Paik Jin-hyun, former President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, Lee Geunkwan, member of the UN International Law Commission, Jose Dallo Moros, Director of the Office of Environmental Management and Mineral Resources at the International Seabed Authority (ISA), and around 100 other domestic and international experts in maritime law.
This symposium, which continues until September 10, is co-hosted with the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS). The event aims to seek solutions to address issues such as ocean acidification, sea level rise, and the collapse of marine ecosystems caused by climate change.
On the first day, presentations were given by experts on topics including: ▲ Strengthening the interconnection between marine science and maritime law and policy ▲ Marine science and technology and maritime law for climate change mitigation.
On the second day, experts such as Hwang Joonsik, Director-General for International Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Patricia Galvao Teles, member of the UN International Law Commission, will participate in sessions covering: ▲ New maritime legal norms and scientific and technological challenges regarding sea level rise ▲ The interaction between maritime law and marine science in climate change litigation.
In the comprehensive discussion session that follows, participants plan to discuss maritime law issues and scientific solutions arising in the process of developing marine science and technology for greenhouse gas reduction and climate crisis adaptation.
Lee Heeseung, President of KIOST, stated, “Interdisciplinary research in marine science and technology and maritime law and policy is essential to respond to the global issue of the climate crisis. Through this event, we will work even more closely with the international community to resolve common challenges facing humanity.”
