Gwangyang Economic Free Zone Authority Signs Business Agreement at Korea-China ESS Forum Attendance

Achievements in Establishing a Global ESS Manufacturing Base
Investment Attraction Activities...Eliciting Local Response

The Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority (Acting Commissioner Seon Yang-gyu, hereinafter referred to as Gwangyang Economic Authority) announced that from the 4th to the 10th of last month, it visited the Chengdu and Xiamen regions in China for 6 nights and 7 days to participate in the 3rd Korea-China ESS Forum and the 24th China International Investment and Trade Fair, actively conducting investment attraction activities in the ESS sector.


ESS stands for "Energy Storage System," which refers to a system that stores energy and allows it to be used when needed.

This Korea-China ESS Forum was the third event held this year following Hangzhou, China, and Ilsan, Korea, and was held in Chengdu, China. On the Korean side, about 15 executives and member companies of the Korea ESS Industry Promotion Association attended.


At the forum, the Gwangyang Economic Authority proposed the joint promotion of a Korea-China energy storage cooperation pilot complex between Gwangyang Bay Area and Chengdu under the theme of "Joint Global Market Entry Plan through the Establishment of Korea-China ESS Cooperation Pilot Complex," drawing significant interest and positive responses from attending companies and institutions.


Following the forum, the Gwangyang Economic Authority signed a memorandum of understanding with Hawaga and the Leshan National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone.


Hawaga is a company established by researchers from Tsinghua University in China, specializing in the manufacturing and solution development of ESS-dedicated semi-solid-state batteries. Through this agreement, it plans to establish a production base in the Gwangyang Bay Area and utilize Korea's FTA platform to explore entry into global markets such as the United States.


In Xiamen, the authority participated in the 24th China International Investment and Trade Fair, operating a joint promotional booth with Jeonnam Province, actively promoting to companies interested in overseas expansion within China.


Additionally, during the event, they participated in an investment briefing session for Chinese companies' overseas expansion, introduced the investment environment of the Gwangyang Bay Area and the Korea-China ESS cooperation pilot project, and subsequently visited Hithium and Kehua Energy, companies showing interest in investing in Korea, for investment consultations.


Seon Yang-gyu, Acting Commissioner of the Gwangyang Economic Authority, stated, “Through this investment attraction activity in China, businesspeople from Korea and China, who are emerging as leaders in the global ESS industry, showed great interest in our region, achieving results that laid the foundation for the Gwangyang Bay Area to leap forward as a global ESS manufacturing base.”


The Gwangyang Economic Authority plans to continuously strengthen its global network in the ESS industry sector in response to the designation of the Gwangyang Bay Area as a secondary battery opportunity development special zone and strive to make the Gwangyang Bay Area a leading ESS manufacturing and export hub.
