Yeongju City Selected for Natural Disaster Risk Improvement Project... Secures 43 Billion KRW in National and Provincial Funds

Comprehensive Maintenance for Flood-Damaged Gaheung District and Others

Building a Safe Yeongju City from Natural Disasters

Yeongju City, North Gyeongsang Province, announced on the 9th that two areas, Gaheung District and Sangmang District, have been selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's "2025 Natural Disaster Risk Improvement District Maintenance Project."

The Natural Disaster Risk Improvement District Maintenance Project is an initiative to improve areas at risk of flooding by installing drainage channels, pump stations, and maintaining stormwater pipelines.

Yeongju City is one of eight locations in North Gyeongsang Province selected for this project. The selected districts will receive national and provincial funding for the maintenance project, as well as various administrative support under the Natural Disaster Countermeasures Act.

To be selected for this project, Yeongju City conducted a comprehensive natural disaster risk reduction planning service until 2022 and finalized the plan through the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's review and confirmation process in April this year. After completing the feasibility study and establishing the basic plan, the city submitted its application in March.

Following this, Yeongju City faithfully carried out the central government's on-site inspections and comprehensive evaluations, ultimately achieving final selection for the project.

With this selection, the city will invest a total project budget of 66 billion KRW (43 billion KRW from national and provincial funds) by 2028 to lay the foundation for building a city safe from natural disasters.

For Gaheung District, 42 billion KRW will be invested to construct a 2km high-level drainage channel and maintain a 3km stormwater pipeline in the area around 688-5, Hyocheon-dong. In Sangmang District, 24 billion KRW will be used to install one pump station and maintain a 2km small stream in the area around 841-6, Sangmang-dong.

Through these efforts, the city aims to protect citizens' lives and property from increasingly frequent extreme rainfall events. In particular, by investing national funds in areas that required comprehensive maintenance after last year's worst flooding in over 20 years, the city plans to carry out more systematic and integrated improvements.

Mayor Park Namseo stated, "Last year's flood caused tremendous hardship for our citizens. Through this maintenance project, we will create a breakthrough opportunity to build a safer Yeongju City, protected from natural disasters. We will continue to implement maintenance projects step by step according to the comprehensive disaster risk reduction plan to ensure thorough disaster prevention."

Along with Yeongju City, the other regions selected for this Natural Disaster Risk Improvement District Maintenance Project are Pohang City, Gyeongju City, Gumi City, Mungyeong City, Cheongdo County, Chilgok County, and Bonghwa County.
