'Tech for Impact Campus' is a project course that connects KAIST students with nonprofit organizations to develop technological solutions for solving social issues. Its purpose is to provide growth opportunities through experiences that address social problems based on technology. In February last year, Kakao signed a business agreement with KAIST to foster technology development and discover technical talent. Since September last year, the course has been conducted for students in the Department of Computer Science at KAIST.
The first class of this semester was held in the form of a camp over one night and two days at the Kakao AI Campus instead of a classroom to allow for in-depth discussions. A total of 41 KAIST students participated, along with Kakao planners and developers, Brian Fellows, and Seokyoung Ryu, Chairman of Kakao Impact, among other experts.
Five speakers from 'Brian Fellows,' a group of social innovators, participated and shared their activities and experiences on various social issues such as ▲disability ▲disaster/prevention ▲renewable energy ▲medicine ▲clothing reuse. Based on the lectures, students presented social issues they would focus on researching intensively throughout the semester and received feedback.
The students were divided into six teams and discussed topics including ▲exercise solutions for wheelchair users ▲disaster safety education games ▲small-scale solar power metering solutions ▲personalized medication guidance programs ▲easy language translators for medicine information and prescriptions ▲platforms to promote clothing reuse.
After the camp, students began developing technological solutions to address the selected topics, with Kakao developers and planners participating as mentors to provide professional technical coaching. Students who successfully complete the course will receive certificates and awards, and follow-up development support will be provided.
Chairman Ryu said, "I hope this camp served as an opportunity for students who will lead our society to think more deeply and take an interest in social issues," adding, "We will continue to strive to provide more students with experiences that create social change through technology via the Tech for Impact Campus."
