Achieving National First Place by Securing an Additional 42.2 Billion KRW in National and Provincial Funds
Hapcheon County in Gyeongnam has newly designated a total of six districts for disaster prevention projects in 2025, securing an additional 42.2 billion KRW in national and provincial funding.
The disaster prevention projects, overseen by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, are aimed at proactively addressing risk factors in areas with a history of disasters or high disaster risk, in order to minimize damage to residents.
The main projects include: comprehensive maintenance for flood and storm-prone living zones, improvement of natural disaster risk zones, stabilization of steep slope collapse risk areas, and maintenance of disaster-prone reservoirs. Seventy-five percent of the total project cost is subsidized by national and provincial funds.
The newly selected districts are: one comprehensive maintenance project for flood and storm-prone living zones (Yangsan District), one improvement project for natural disaster risk zones (Majang District), one stabilization project for steep slope collapse risk areas (Odosan District), and three disaster-prone reservoir maintenance projects (Eopa, Dumusan, Nogok Districts), totaling six projects with a combined budget of 56.3 billion KRW. For the 2025 fiscal year, 3.9 billion KRW has been allocated, covering design and compensation costs.
Despite difficulties in securing local funds due to a decrease in local allocation taxes, the county has actively visited related ministries such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and Gyeongnam Province multiple times to negotiate and request support, ensuring the selection of these projects for proactive disaster prevention efforts.
Including these six new projects, Hapcheon County is pursuing a total of 20 disaster prevention projects, with a combined planned budget of 429.4 billion KRW.
In particular, 59 billion KRW will be invested in 2025, marking the highest amount of national funding secured among all cities, counties, and districts nationwide for the second consecutive year. These disaster prevention projects are expected to provide residents with a safer living environment and significantly contribute to revitalizing the local economy.
County Governor Kim Yuncheol stated, "Disaster prevention projects are 3.5 times more cost-effective than disaster recovery projects," adding, "We will continue to proactively promote disaster prevention projects to make Hapcheon County safer from natural disasters."
