On the 9th, Dongwon Group announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with LG Electronics to establish a high-efficiency HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) solution as part of its Carbon Neutrality 2050 initiative, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by more than 40% compared to current levels by 2030.

Accordingly, the group plans to invest an additional 40 billion KRW by 2030 to cut carbon emissions from about 60 major business sites to nearly half of the current levels. Dongwon Group explained that the collaboration will build a high-efficiency HVAC solution applying LG Electronics’ core component technology, 'CoreTech,' which offers high energy efficiency and excellent stability.

This project is led by the General Technology Institute, an organization within Dongwon Group responsible for production innovation activities, new technology establishment, and new business discovery. Engineers and experts from the General Technology Institute are collaborating with LG Electronics’ technical team to carry out the project. The first target sites selected were the Gyeongsan Center and Yangsan Center, logistics hubs of Dongwon Loex. It took more than six months just to diagnose the energy efficiency of approximately 50 HVAC units and establish solutions. Dongwon Group chose these sites first considering the characteristics of Dongwon Loex’s cold chain system applied in low-temperature distribution logistics.

Previously, Dongwon Group had mainly worked on reducing carbon emissions by innovating materials for food packaging or enhancing the durability of equipment. In 2020, marking its 50th anniversary, the company declared the inaugural year for carbon neutrality efforts and established energy-saving plans for each business site. Since then, it has focused its capabilities on integrating carbon emission reduction across core business elements such as fisheries, food, materials, and logistics. Solar panels have already been installed at major business sites nationwide, producing an average of 1,285 kW of electricity annually, continuing efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

A Dongwon Group official stated, "As the international community transitions to a decarbonized economy, Dongwon Group has initiated this project to proactively respond to climate change. Starting with the replacement of production line equipment, we will completely transform the company’s fundamental structure."
