Independent Efforts for Citizen Safety Bear Fruit, Including Platform Screen Door Step Improvement and Train Malfunction Analysis
Seoul Metro (President Baek Ho) achieved a remarkable feat by having all six participating teams in six categories, including on-site improvement, receive the Presidential Award at the 50th National Quality Innovation Competition (National Quality Circle Competition), recognizing the excellence of their innovative quality activities.
This is the highest record since the company's establishment.
The National Quality Innovation Competition is an event jointly hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s National Institute of Technology and Standards, Gyeonggi Province, and Suwon City, and organized by the Korea Standards Association. It annually discovers and awards quality circles that contribute to improving technology and service quality through autonomous work improvement activities.
At this year’s National Quality Innovation Competition, Seoul Metro’s six teams in six categories (on-site improvement, safety quality, big data·AI, ESG, new product development (NPD), and free format (service)) passed the Seoul regional preliminaries as the best quality circles and secured tickets to the finals.
In the national finals, 298 quality circles with about 2,600 members who passed the preliminaries from 17 cities and provinces competed fiercely over excellent quality improvement cases. Seoul Metro was highly evaluated for enhancing subway safety and excellence in on-site improvement, winning three silver awards and three bronze awards, with all six teams receiving the Presidential Award.
The three teams awarded silver are ‘Technic Manager’ (ESG category, improvement of safety platform for platform screen doors, Technical Planning Office), ‘Jeongchamsi’ (Big Data·AI category, big data-based analysis of train failures, Fire Prevention Vehicle Office), and ‘PowerON Tongjeon’ (New Product Development (NPD) category, development of a current indicator to prevent electrical accidents, Electric Office 1).
The three teams awarded bronze are ‘Defect-Free New Production Train’ (Safety Quality category, Korea’s first risk assessment of newly built trains, Vehicle Manufacturing Office·Sinnae Vehicle Office), ‘Jeolgutong’ (On-site Improvement category, reduction of maintenance time for train insulation separation devices, Electric Office 1), and ‘Electric Da Vinci’ (Free Format (Service) category, IoT-based improvement of power transmission and distribution processes, Electric Office 2).
Seoul Metro plans to continuously revise and supplement the award-winning works, which have been verified for excellence in quality improvement, and expand their application to other fields. Furthermore, it envisions establishing the ‘Seoul Metro Quality Improvement System,’ which systematizes the process of analyzing, improving, and applying issues felt by employees working on-site.
Baek Ho, President of Seoul Metro, said, “The employees’ autonomous and passionate improvement activities led to quality innovation and strengthened competitiveness of the Seoul subway, resulting in the best-ever performance. We will continue to actively encourage internal quality innovation activities to create a safe and convenient environment as a comprehensive transportation company and enhance the qualitative level of transportation services.”
