At the Top of the Ferris Wheel, Spinning Like a Plastic Bag... Multiple Accidents Amid Super Typhoon 'Yagi'

4 Dead in Hainan Province... Also Hits Vietnam

Typhoon No. 11 'Yagi' has struck mainland China twice, causing damage in various areas. Several ships anchored at the port were swept into the sea, resulting in one person drowning. There were also cases of fatalities due to roofs collapsing from strong winds and heavy rain.

Earlier, local media including China Central Television (CCTV) reported on the 7th (local time) that as of 3 p.m. that day, four people had died in Hainan Province due to the typhoon. Yagi made landfall on the coast of Wenchang City on Hainan Island in southern China around 4:20 p.m. the previous day, and then reached Xuwen County in Guangdong Province around 10:20 p.m. the same day.

The wind speed at the center of Yagi exceeded 200 km/h, causing disruptions to transportation, communication, and power supply in the area, and schools were ordered to close. In Hainan Province, it is reported that more than 400 km of roads were damaged, including 26 national and provincial trunk roads and 103 expressways.

A video captured the gondolas of a Ferris wheel installed in an amusement park in Haikou shaking violently like balloons. According to the footage, trees were swaying in the strong typhoon, and the Ferris wheel was being blown helplessly by the wind.

Moreover, numerous photos and videos posted by local Chinese media showed parked vehicles overturned and rolling three times due to the typhoon, as well as broken glass windows of apartment or commercial buildings. A woman walking with a child was seen slipping and sliding on the street, unable to withstand the strong winds. Street trees were uprooted as well.

Ultimately, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered thorough disaster relief efforts, relocation of evacuees, minimization of casualties, and restoration of infrastructure. Premier Li Qiang also issued instructions to minimize disaster damage.

Meanwhile, Yagi, which caused significant damage in China, also struck Vietnam, resulting in dozens of casualties. According to a compilation of reports from AP News and others on the 8th, several ships anchored at the port were swept into the sea, with one person drowning in the process. There were also cases of fatalities due to roofs collapsing from strong winds and heavy rain.

Thousands of trees were uprooted and utility poles fell in Hanoi and other areas. Many houses were damaged, with roofs blown away by the strong winds.
