Oh Se-hoon, Park Gang-su Trying to Appease Mapo District Mayor?

Seoul City and Mapo-gu Conflict Over Sanggam-dong Incineration Plant Construction; Seoul City's 'Fun City Project, Playable Seoul' Creates New 'Street Art' (Floor Painting) at Hongdae Red Road Power Plant Plaza in Mapo-gu

Oh Se-hoon, Park Gang-su Trying to Appease Mapo District Mayor? Hongdae Red Road

Mayor Oh Se-hoon was very close with Park Kang-soo, the mayor of Mapo District.

Mayor Oh even personally attended the inauguration ceremony of Park Kang-soo, the 8th elected mayor of Mapo District, to offer his congratulations.

However, their conflict began over the construction of an incineration plant in Sangam-dong.

Mapo District argues that the current incineration plant in Sangam-dong causes significant harm to residents and insists that increasing waste separation and processing would be sufficient to handle the waste.

Because of this, the issue of the Sangam-dong waste incineration plant remains at an impasse.

Seoul City experienced difficulties, ranking 23rd out of 25 autonomous districts in Seoul in 2023, after significantly reducing the special grant funds to Mapo District due to conflicts over the incineration plant issue.

Meanwhile, Seoul City has attracted attention by creating new 'street art' (floor paintings) at the Hongdae Red Road Power Plant Plaza in Mapo District as part of the 'Fun City Project, Playable Seoul,' which brings fun into the urban environment.

'Hongdae Red Road' is the most ambitious project proposed by Park Kang-soo, mayor of Mapo District, and is a key initiative to revitalize the Hongdae commercial area in Mapo.

Since the creation of Hongdae Red Road, the commercial area has been greatly revitalized, and the project is regarded as one that adds luster to the administration of the 'idea man' Mayor Park Kang-soo.

Seoul City collaborated with Korea International Art Fair (KIAF), the largest art fair in Korea, to carry out this project in this area, which is Mayor Park Kang-soo’s top priority. Artist Choo Mi-rim created a 300㎡ artwork titled 'Pixel Air,' depicting pixel icons of people looking at maps and taking photos at travel destinations.

The floor painting images can be used for activities such as taking shadow photos.

In particular, before promoting the project, the Seoul City Tourism and Sports Bureau (Director Kim Young-hwan) consulted in advance with Mapo District officials.

Although this project was promoted as part of Seoul City's efforts to create a special attractive city, it drew even more attention by selecting the trending area of Hongdae Red Road.
