A man in his 20s who accepted a co-conspirator's offer to "turn himself in and receive a large sum of money" after being tracked by investigative authorities for distributing fake SIM cards ended up behind bars.

According to the legal community on the 7th, Judge Kim Taek-seong of the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 2 sentenced A (25), who was indicted on charges of harboring a criminal and violating the Telecommunications Business Act, to one year in prison.

A, who committed the crime with B, a distributor of fake SIM cards, in March, called the police on June 20 and falsely confessed to having opened and sold prepaid SIM cards, and during the actual investigation, testified that he was the real culprit, thereby aiding B's escape and was brought to trial on these charges.

According to the investigation, A accepted B’s offer?who was being tracked by the police?that if A turned himself in, he would receive 20 million won, 5 million won per month while serving a prison sentence, 30 million won after completing the sentence, and that a lawyer would be appointed on his behalf, leading to the false confession. In addition, A was charged in June with possession of ketamine in his wallet (violation of the Narcotics Control Act).

Judge Kim explained the sentencing, saying, "The act of delivering SIM cards leads to the distribution of so-called 'fake phones,' which can be used for other crimes, causing significant social harm, making severe punishment inevitable," and added, "The sentence also reflects the fact that the defendant showed remorse during the investigation and actively cooperated with related investigations thereafter."
