Foreign media reported that the United States and Iraq have agreed to withdraw the US-led international coalition forces stationed in Iraq by 2026.
According to the agreement reported by foreign media on the 6th (local time), several hundred US-led coalition troops will withdraw by September next year. By then, all coalition forces will leave Ain al-Asad Airbase in western Iraq, and the troops stationed in Baghdad will be significantly reduced.
The remaining coalition forces will stay for an additional year until the end of 2026 in Erbil, the Kurdish region in northern Iraq, to continue operations targeting IS and Islamic State forces in Syria, after which they will withdraw, foreign media reported.
The United States and Iraq are also reportedly exploring plans to leave some troops as advisors to the Iraqi military after the US troop withdrawal.
Currently, about 2,500 US troops are stationed in Iraq, and other countries such as Germany, France, Spain, and Italy have also dispatched some troops to Iraq.
The plan for the withdrawal of US troops stationed in Iraq awaits final approval and official announcement by both countries, but sources said the agreement details could be announced within this month.
