"Offering a 20 Billion Won Discount"... Why Has Michael Jordan's Mansion Remained Unsold for 12 Years?

Jordan Style Strongly Reflected for Ordinary People to Live
Purchase Attempts Made but Location and Parking Space Hindered

The "Basketball Emperor," Michael Jordan (61), has had his Jordan estate in the Chicago suburbs on the market for 12 years, but it is still reportedly without a new owner.

On the 5th (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Jordan's 5,202㎡ (1,573 pyeong) mansion in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago, was put up for sale in 2012, but no buyer has appeared.

Jordan initially listed the mansion for $29 million (38.5 billion KRW) in 2012, but after it did not sell, he lowered the price to $15 million (19.9 billion KRW). Promotional videos in English and Chinese were even produced.

There have been attempts to purchase the property. Several investors tried to buy the mansion and convert it into a Jordan museum, conference center, or condos, but none of these plans materialized. A Highland Park city official pointed out, "The mansion has limited parking space and zoning issues."

Moreover, WSJ reported that potential buyers who want a mansion of this size in the area prefer to live right next to Lake Michigan, but Jordan's mansion is about 3 km away from the lake, which diminishes its appeal.

Above all, potential buyers and real estate agents say the main reason is that the mansion reflects Michael Jordan's tastes too much for an ordinary person to live in.

The mansion has two above-ground floors and one basement floor, featuring 9 bedrooms, 19 bathrooms, a study, a home theater, a home bar, a smoking room, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, tennis courts, a golf practice range, and a guest house.

The main entrance gate is adorned with a large decoration of Jordan's iconic number 23, and Jordan's silhouette with the Nike logo is painted in various places, including the outdoor putting green flag and the home theater.

In line with Jordan's tastes, who enjoyed cigars and poker, the mansion includes cigar storage facilities and a poker table. Additionally, there is an aquarium brought from the Chicago Playboy Mansion, making it an extraordinary mansion.

Despite not selling, Jordan's mansion continues to pique public curiosity. Interest in the house increased after the 2020 Netflix documentary "The Last Dance," which chronicled Jordan's era with the Chicago Bulls dynasty, aired.

Tourists often take photos at the entrance, and last year, teenagers broke a window and trespassed, resulting in their arrest by the police.

Jordan currently mainly resides in his mansion located in Jupiter, Florida. Although the Chicago mansion is vacant, it was reported that Jordan paid an annual property tax of $135,000 (about 180 million KRW) as of 2021.
