On the 6th, Yonhap News reported that "Judge Kim Taek-seong of the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 2 sentenced A (22), who was charged with abuse of power, assault, insult, special assault, extortion, and property damage, to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year probation period."
Previously, A committed multiple assaults and abuses against junior soldier B at a unit in Goseong-gun, Gangwon Province. In May of last year, A hit B with a club made by wrapping a newspaper inside a toilet paper roll and securing it with box tape in the barracks, saying B "did not understand words properly." A also poked B's instep with a field shovel during trash cleanup, claiming it was a joke, and assaulted him with the club without any particular reason.
In particular, A tried to fatten B by putting 10 slices of cheese into cup ramen broth, microwaving it, and then making B eat it with rice. After a samgyeopsal (pork belly) gathering, A forced B to eat 20 leftover bibim-myeon (spicy mixed noodles) packets until he vomited. It was also revealed that A prevented B from sleeping during bedtime and harassed him.
Judge Kim stated, "Although the defendant's guilt is serious, considering that he confessed and showed remorse, reached a settlement with the victims who do not wish for punishment, has no prior criminal record, and that family and acquaintances petitioned for leniency, I sentence the defendant to a suspended prison term with community service as a condition."
