Industrial Safety Golden Bell Held for Foreign Workers at Samsung Heavy Industries
The sound of the Industrial Safety Golden Bell resonated at the shipyard. The ones who rang the Golden Bell by solving safety and health quizzes were foreign workers.
The Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (Director Gong Heungdoo) held the 'Industrial Safety Golden Bell' event for foreign workers at the indoor gymnasium of Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do on the 5th, aiming to prevent industrial accidents in the shipbuilding industry and to promote a culture of safety.
This Industrial Safety Golden Bell event was organized by the Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency and sponsored by Samsung Heavy Industries. The event was held for foreign workers employed at the Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje Shipyard, where many foreign workers are based.
On the 5th, foreign workers at Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje Shipyard were fully engaged in the Industrial Safety Golden Bell event.
The festive atmosphere was set with a congratulatory speech by Director An Jongjoo of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency. Two hundred foreign workers formed 100 teams of two, and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., they gave their best for three hours to ring the Golden Bell. The top five teams that demonstrated outstanding competence in industrial safety and health were awarded prizes according to their ranking. Workers from Russia, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Indonesia took home the prize money.
To operate the event, the Busan Foreign Resident Support Center and local universities collaborated to provide interpreters for each nationality. The quiz questions, prepared together with the agency's International Cooperation Division, were translated into the languages of the participating countries, making it easier for foreign workers to answer them.
The industrial safety questions covered topics such as safety regulations at shipbuilding sites, safety and health activities emphasized by Samsung Heavy Industries, and Korean culture. To further motivate foreign workers to participate, a mix of pre-shared and unreleased questions was used to adjust the difficulty, and videos and photos were actively utilized. There were also event-style quiz questions and celebratory performances to add to the fun of the event.
The final Golden Bell question was about Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). One team of Indonesian foreign workers remained until the end and succeeded in ringing the Golden Bell.
Director An Jongjoo stated, "Safety is the highest value of humanity and should be respected regardless of age, gender, nationality, or race," and added, "I hope the Industrial Safety Golden Bell will further raise safety awareness among foreign workers and become a foundation for a safer shipbuilding workplace."
