'Full-Scale Promotion of Establishing the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center... Total Project Cost Confirmed at 76.9 Billion Won'

Since the National Institute of Health took over the establishment project of the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center from the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2020, it established the 'Establishment Operation Plan and Basic Construction Plan' in 2021. Subsequently, from May 2022 to July last year, a 14-month feasibility reassessment was conducted to lay the foundation for the establishment of the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center. After continuous review and consultation with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the total project cost for the National Cardiovascular Center was finalized at 76.9 billion KRW.

Accordingly, the National Institute of Health will establish the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center with a total floor area of 13,837㎡ in Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do by 2029. As the first step, design competition procedures, including preliminary preparations for basic design, will be conducted by the end of this year.

The National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center will carry out research and development (R&D) related to national cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, support and manage such projects, secure clinical information and resources specialized for Koreans, and conduct technology development research for public interest purposes that are difficult to perform in the private sector. It will also produce scientific evidence for effective prevention, management, and overcoming strategies for patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Park Hyun-young, director of the National Institute of Health, stated, "We will steadily prepare so that the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center can contribute to the promotion of public health and the revitalization of related research and industries through research on treatment technology development for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and the establishment of research information and resource sharing systems."
